If Mom says no…just ask Grandma or Baba!

My first blog was about a fun Baby Shower where I featured some cute sock animals and adorable cupcakes. This time I decided to go to other spectrum of my blog name and share a wonderful room I did for my in-laws, aka Grandma and Baba.  They live very close to us and are super helpful with our 2 girls. They love to have the girls over for play-dates and sleep-overs. They also have 2 other beautiful granddaughters who visit from California, so they really wanted to create a space just for all of them! My MIL recruited me to help her and I happily and willingly accepted.  It was hard for them to part with their son’s room (I think just as hard for the  son) but they felt it was time to bring in the new generation!

Obviously the room wasn’t going to be used everyday so we really wanted to try and makeover the space without breaking the bank. We decided that we were going to keep the bright blue carpet, it really wasn’t that bad :), and the existing furniture!

Color-scheme?!  At the time we decided to take on the project we only had 2 girls in the family and after much contemplation we decided that we wanted to do something “gender neutral” to play it safe.  My MIL and I picked out this adorable bedding from Pottery Barn Kids. But by the time we got moving on the project, we had welcomed 2 more girls!  Since we had already committed to the bedding we needed to find a way to add some girlie charm!

Enter paint chips!  Now what color do we paint that would go well with blue carpet, match the new “gender neutral” bedding, and be girlie? Yellow of course, my favorite room color!  We tried out several paint colors by Benjamin Moore and finally settled on Squish Squash.  Isn’t it amazing what a fresh coat of paint will do?

Time to pull in the girl charm. We really wanted to make it about all 4 of them so we decided to do the ever so popular personalized names on the wall.  I went to Michaels and found some really adorable letters and came up with a fun & funky way to display them.

How did we tie it all together?  I recently had visited a friend of mine and she showed me her daugther’s adorable bedroom. She had the best idea for creating a room border…good old fashioned ribbon!  I fell in love with the idea.  We scoured the ribbon aisle at Michaels and settled on this beautiful red and blue plaid ribbon.  We then decided to add these little wooden flowers to pull in the wooden flower pegs from the personalized names.  My niece, BJ, helped me paint all of these names and flowers.  She did such a great job, thanks BJ!

DIY! I always have the hardest time finding window treatments but did find a clever way to pull in a cute valance into the room. The Pottery Barn bedding did not come with matching valances but did come with matching crib bedskirt. I have done this before and it works so well with standard windows. I take the cribskirts, cut them down and convert them into valances. It’s super easy to do if you have just the right sized windows for the job!

We added a fun kids table, baskets from the Container Store, a changing table, and a new lamp!

Now they never want to leave Grandma and Baba’s house!  Here are more fun pix! Click on image to enlarge.
